It all started after a softball game, and a few beers. We played a double-header and then went to the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium for a few well deserved beers. Brian had just finished telling everyone about his 18 week training program for the upcoming City of Oaks Marathon, also Brian had just recently joined the Flying Saucer’s UFO club. The UFO Club rewards customers for drinking 200 different beers by immortalizing them in the “Ring of Fame” by creating a plate that bears their accomplishment and is then adorned on the walls of the establishment. Out of nowhere (ok maybe the beer was a influencing factor) Brian declared that he would not only train for the Marathon, but it that same time period he would also drink the 200 beers required to earn his plate. The only problem with this brilliant idea, the flying saucer UFO club only gives a person credit for 3 beers a day. Which means that Brian will have to drink 3 beers a day 67 times in 126 days, all while completing a 355 mile training program!! Not to be left out, he has convinced some of his friends to join him…we will use this blog to update all of our progress.
Are you interested in Joining Brian and his friends in the Running On Beer Challenge? You can commit to any of the following Full Marathon, Half Marathon, Full Beerathon (200 Beers, 67 Days) or Half Beerathon (100 Beers, 34 Days) or just be a supporter and come out and share a beer with us. Let us know and we will add you to the site. Just go here and fill out the form.
(By the way this is in no way being sponsored or endorsed by either the City of Oaks Marathon or Flying Saucer Draught Emporium…although we wish they would, drinking 200 beers can become costly!)
I made it. Barely. I have to admit, I took the training way too lightly this time around… however, I was able to finish the half – with help from my brother and family friend! The weather was very reminiscent of what we experienced at the City of Oaks race, with lots of rain and cold temps. With those conditions, we didn’t see many horses, they were smart and stayed indoors. As promised, we celebrated our race with a Kentucky Ale on site. Afterwards we were able to have some Middle Ages Raspberry Ale, which my parents brought down from Syracuse, NY. It was a refreshing treat! I’m not sure what kind of run is next, but it will most definitely involve some training, I think. While I make up my mind I guess there is always some beer training to do too…

After completing the City of Oaks half, I decided to sign up for another half with my brother and family friend, in Lexington, KY. Although my beer drinking has remained up to par, my running has, how do you say, been put on the back burner. Therefore, I’m fairly certain that I’ll end up in a Lexington hospital this weekend. My only motivation “Kentucky Ale wants to be the first to congratulate you after you finish your Half-Marathon or 5k this Sunday!” Beer.

p.s. If I don’t make it back alive, can someone please see that my plate is put up at the Saucer…

I finally completed my first marathon since the RunningonBeer.com challenge and third marathon overall. The Cary Tobacco Trail. I was not able to complete the Runningonbeer.com challenge, however I did run 26.2 miles and enjoy an array of delicious beers post marathon today. Thanks to everyone that came out to support us, including the RunningonBeer.com crew. Marathons are just more fun when beer is involved!
Several Breweries and 1 running magazine have reached out to us to find out more information on the challenge…the 2010 Challenge is coming soon…will you be ready?
It’s hard to believe, but I actually completed my half-marathon and full beerathon this past Sunday. And yes, I’ve already cried about it. Although I have a throbbing pain in my right arch, quads that never knew sore, and a liver that’s pretty angry at me, it was well worth it! Everyone says that you’ll want to sign up for another one (13.1 or plate #2, I guess) once you complete your first, but I’m not sure if that’s true for me quite yet. I need a little rest first! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported me – whether drinking or running – there is no way I would have done this alone, especially since I’m still scared to go to the bar by myself, let alone run alone. I’ve made some great friends, had some hilarious times and wow, has this been a fun journey…

I just finished my last run before the marathon. It was a quick two miles on the treadmill, hopefully the 26.2 tomorrow is just as easy. For anyone who doesn’t know we are having a post marathon celebration tomorrow night at 6pm at the Flying Saucer where a few of us will be finishing our respective drinking challenges. Hope to see you all out, and good luck to everyone running tomorrow.
Come out to Trivia tonight!
After consulting my ultra high-tech Saucer countdown calendar it looks like this might be my last week of serious beer consumption. Does this mean that I’ll never have to say, “I’ve got to go get my three in” again?
- Rebecca K
In the past 12 weeks that we’ve been doing this challenge I’ve somehow found the time to drink 198 beers at the Saucer. At least 198 that count. Now I just need to figure out how to squeeze 2 more beers in during the next 30 days. Actually the real decision is what to do for number 200. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Currently there are 3 schools of thought.
1. Drink #200, get it over with now
2. Save #200 for November 1st and drink it when I cross the finish line (let’s not think about open container laws)
3. Save #200 for November 1st, finish the race, go home sleep for many hours, shower, head to Saucer and celebrate finishing the race by drinking #200
Let me know your thoughts and feel free to post other suggestions.
Our own TheShortStop drank his 700th beer on Tuesday. 3 1/2 plates.
How close will he be come Nov 1st?
After I finished yesterday’s run I noticed that the top of my right foot was very sore. Didn’t feel all that bad last night, but when I woke up this morning I was in a lot of pain. Since it wasn’t getting better and was having trouble walking on it I decided better safe than sorry, so I have a doctors appt at 3:45 for xrays. Wish me luck, would hate to have to figure out how to run with a cast on my foot.
I’ve received confirmation from mom that she will be joining us for trivia tonight at Saucer. She had told me should would make an appearance at some point during this challenge and with it coming to an end (14 beers to go) I was able to talk her into joining us tonigth. She will also be bringing four friends, hopefully they will be able to help the RunningOnBeer trivia team as we can use all the help we can get. Also, as we discussed last week we are going to try to have everyone wear their runningonbeer tshirts for Tuesday trivia. I have a quick five mile run to get in after work but planning on being at the Saucer around 6:30. Think mom is showing up around 7.
This past Sunday I attempted my first 20 mile run. I was only scheduled to run 19, but everyone I’ve talked to told me you really want to get in at least two 20 mile runs before the marathon. It actually went better than expected. I tried something that I’d been reading about which was to walk one minute out of every mile you run. Don’t know if it was an additional two weeks of training, this new technique or a combination of things, but the 20 mile run was much easier than 18, and I was able to shed almost 45 seconds per mile off of my previous pace. Not sure how I feel about stopping to walk at mile marker one on the big day, I guess I see how the rest of the training goes.
Yes, I’ve made it to my sesquicentennial beer. I guess there is no turning back now, however this last push might be the most difficult… 17 more visits!

Well, as most of you know I had a Brooklyn Number 2 as my 200th beer to complete my plate.
So now comes the hard part, what do I put on my plate? Please respond with your suggestions. In doing some research I like the following well-known beer quotes:
- I am off for a quiet pint, followed by 15 Noisy ones.
- Work is the Curse of the Drinking Class
- I do not drink more than a sponge
- A Quart of Ale is a Dish for a King
- Beer makes you feel the way you ought to feel without beer
What’s you suggestion?

I will be consuming my 200th today at 12:30, if anyone wants to join.

A Post Road Pumpkin! New on draft at the Saucer. They have gotten about 20 new beers on tap (hooray for pint night) and a new Fly Paper today!
p.s. Pumpkin Ale is amazing!

Let me start by saying it’s been way to long since I’ve posted to the site and I have to work on that. Somehow I’ve already taken 2 days off this week, guess this is hitting me harder than I thought it would. Maybe the key is just sticking to three. Either way, I’m not taking another day off. At least not today. I’m planning on heading down after work. Should be there around 5:30, and since it’s another gorgeous day in Raleigh I’ll definitely be out on the patio. Hopefully I’ll have some company.
I am thinking of a saucer visit tonight, I know Brian has something going on and will not be able to attend…is anyone else planning to go, and if so…when?
Steve G

It’s true, I’ve had the first intervention since the challenge has begun. Let’s just say I have some concerned friends (that are not part of this challenge) that sat me down and told me if things don’t slow down after Nov. 1st, then they’ll be worried.
As of now, I’m at 96 and will have to see this thing through.. but am getting a little concerned myself.
-Rebecca K
TheShortStop and Myself will (hopefully) be meeting for lunch + 3. Who else is in?
Steve G
The biggest dilemma of my day – when to make it to the Saucer? I have kickball from 6:15-7:30 and I can’t decide if I should go early, or go late… anyone have plans made which would help simplify this decision?
-Rebecca K
Tonight I will be drinking my 100th beer. In addition to my 101st and 102nd. With just over ten weeks of marathon training left I’m hitting the halfway point towards my drinking goal. I hope to see a bunch of you out tonight to celebrate number 100. I was thinking right after work, 5:30ish, but let me know when you are planning on heading down. My arm can always be twisted to show up at another time.

After taking last night off due to babysitting constraints, I am headed to Kentucky (yes, I’m going on the Bourbon trail) this weekend to visit family! This means today, Friday and Sat off as well. 4 days without the Saucer? What will I do with myself? Hope everyone has a good weekend!
-Rebecca K
Anyone heading to saucer today? If so when?
Steve

Who is in for Trivia Tonight? What time 7 or 9:30?
Steve

Lots of work for me today, I have 13 pages more to write and then I will be able to go to saucer.
And they say you can find anything on the internet, Lies!! all Lies!!
Steve G
Sorry I’m not posting as often as I should. 17 Hummingbird waters down….33 to go!
I ran 3.75 miles today, cross trained yesterday by ridding my bike 23 miles. Does a doubleheader in softball count for more cross training today?

One of Saucer’s finest women has joined the RunningOnBeer movement. After listening to Brian and Steve endlessly talk about how happy she would be if she joined the RunningOnBeer challege, one of our favorite Saucer employees has committed to running a half marathon.
Jess has already been in training and is quickly getting her distance running form back.
Welcome Jessica…
